Dojo Kun

We are training our hearts and our bodies to develop a strong and unshakeable spirit.
We are searching for the true martial way, so that we can learn to keep our senses alert.
With the utmost sincerity; we look to cultivate a spirit of humility.
We observe the rules of courtesy; we respect our superiors and abstain from violence.
We believe in God and never forget the true value of humility.
We will always reach for new heights, with strength and serenity, without being distracted.
All our life, through the discipline that karate gives us, we will search to discover the true path.

Osu!

We must accept that our inner path is the direction that we should trust in and follow in order to have a good life. We cannot count on anything to reassure us, nor can we look to other people to confirm for us that we have chosen the correct way of life.

Osu

Osu means patience, respect, and appreciation.

To develop a solid body and strong spirit, rigorous training is necessary. This feat is very difficult because it demands a lot of effort and commitment. Your goal is to reach your limit. But wait! To attain this goal, you must persevere and learn to be patient. Here, you will properly define what your limits are, constantly find ways to surpass them. You must challenge yourself and face your weaknesses. You should not quit or stop accelerating. This means Osu.

Secondly, the main reason why you must undergo such intense training is for you to become focused on yourself and to learn self-respect. This respect will emanate from you, and be communicated to your instructor and those who surround you. Osu.

Finally, when you enter the dojo and greet others by saying osu, this means you respect your dojo and the time you spend there training comes to an end, you, once again, salute your teacher and fellow students by saying osu. Your are doing this to show them your appreciation. This is your way of thanking them. This feeling of appreciation is osu.

There, osu is a very significant word in Oyama karate. It signifies patience, respect, and appreciation. This is the reason why the word osu is always being used. It is to remind us that these qualities are fundamental.

Mokuso

This is a form of mediation, which is used at the beginning and end of each course, where you close your eyes.

Our daily lives fill our minds with a number of distracting thoughts. Before your training, it is necessary to relax and to completely clear your mind. Your body and spirit must unite and you must concentrate on nothing else but your training.

Training means, "fighting oneself". Before starting the class, you must separate yourself from the outside world. The outside world holds a number of problems and preoccupations. These are simply distractions. You must quiet your thoughts and calm your spirit. This will allow you to focus and control your body, and perform to the best of your ability.

After the effort and excitement of the training, you must meditate to calm down and empty your thoughts once again. This time, you bring yourself back to the reality of your daily activities. At this point, you are refreshed, your spirit is clear, and you are better prepared to face you daily life. Living in a stronger and healthier-feeling body, you can adopt a new attitude on life. "A healthy body means a healthy mind".

To look at life in a positive attitude, you must be resistant to negative thoughts, deaf to jealousy and betrayal, immune to fear and quitting, and be accepting of the natural course of life, even when things out of ordinary occur.
